Review & Description

Ben's thoughtless, cruel words hurt Maggie. Now Ben's come to apologize--and it's Maggie's turn. She isn't just going to use words.

About 4,800 words

Excerpt:

Nobody had to spell out how it would work. One, Ben would fake a sincere apology. Two, I'd pretend to believe him. Three, everybody would get off both our backs. Four, we'd keep our distance when circumstance threw us together. End of story.

Ten minutes after the appointed hour of his sham apology, the driveway remained empty. Wasn't that just like him, being late when he was supposed to be currying my favor? I took my coffee and the newspaper to the wrought iron bistro table out back. He'd find me when I didn't answer the door.

Tires crunched the gravel driveway a full twenty minutes past the appointed hour. A car door slammed. Minutes later, my doorbell unanswered, Ben's footfalls ignored the stepping stones joining driveway to patio, his boots on the gravel noisier than chewing Grape-Nuts.

Ben rounded the corner of the house. "Maggie?"

"In back," I called.

Silence followed the gate's creak as he crossed the grass, then his boots tocked on the patio's brick. Though I felt his presence, I didn't look up until I finished the local news section. I could keep a person waiting, too.

Ben didn't seem to mind. Perched slightly above me on the edge of the raised planter, he removed the lid from his take-out coffee and dropped it into a paper grocery bag near his feet. What had he brought?

He'd stopped at a store, then for coffee, even though he was behind schedule. Late for Maggie's mattered less than medium latte.

"If you came to say something to me, sit where I can see you."

He plopped onto the other chair. "Good morning to you, too, Mag. It is a lovely day." His clothes and hair were disheveled to fashionable perfection, and he needed a shave, but that barely dimmed his allure. His looks were marred only by his awareness of his appeal.

To other women, maybe. We each had our roles in the large social circle which included us both. Ben was the ladies' man, I the confidante who posed no threat to wives or girlfriends. Guys who really missed their exes and needed a reminder of why they'd walked out called me at three in the morning, knowing I'd be alone.

Ben slept alone only when he wanted to.
